DAVID L. STEINER BIOGRAPHY
David Steiner is an American contemporary painter whose work interrogates the tension between materiality and perception, presence and dissolution. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Steiner has cultivated a rigorous, process-driven practice grounded in gesture, surface, and the transformative potential of paint. His works operate at the intersection of abstraction and figuration, where image is not fixed but emerges—then recedes—within layered fields of color and texture. Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media on a large scale, Steiner constructs paintings through an additive and subtractive methodology. Surfaces are built, disrupted, and reconstituted, revealing a temporal record of their own making. This iterative process positions the work in dialogue with postwar abstraction, while maintaining a distinctly contemporary sensibility attuned to impermanence, fragmentation, and the instability of form. Steiner’s major bodies of work—“Totems”, “Refractions”, and “Quays”—function as parallel investigations into archetype, light, and spatial tension. The Totem series distills the human silhouette into a primordial signifier, evoking collective memory and the persistence of form across time and culture. In Refractions, prismatic color fields fracture and reassemble, exploring the mechanics of perception and the phenomenology of light. The Quays works introduce a quiet, contemplative geometry—objects suspended between movement and stillness, navigating the threshold between structure and void. This work is inspired by ruins of ports of trade and, the ancient world of commerce, is reflected in the stories told by the mixed media and textures from around the world. In parallel with his studio practice, Steiner has played a significant role in shaping the cultural landscape of Sarasota. As co-founder of State of the Arts Gallery, he helped establish a vital platform for regional artists, fostering visibility, collaboration, and sustained engagement with the arts community for over 25 years. His dual perspective as both artist and gallerist informs a practice that is deeply attuned to the ecosystem in which contemporary art is created, exhibited, and collected. Based in Sarasota, Florida, Steiner is also the founder of David Steiner Gallery & Studio, where his work is produced and exhibited. His paintings are held in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and are increasingly recognized for their ability to engage architectural space with both physical presence and conceptual depth. Steiner’s paintings resist resolution, instead inviting sustained looking—where meaning is not prescribed, but discovery comes alive at every encounter.
